Standard vs. Laser Cataract Surgery

Basic Cataract Surgery

Modern Cataract surgery as it stands today was first introduced in 1967 by Dr. Charles Kelman. The surgery has progressively and significantly improved throughout the years. In this technique, our surgeons utilize ultrasonic waves to break up and emulsify the cataract (phacoemulsification) through a small incision (~ 1.8 mm). The incision is self-sealing without any need for sutures or stitching.

Laser Cataract Surgery

Laser Cataract surgery at Fraser Eye Care Center involves utilizing two synergistic but varying technologies including: The Femtosecond Laser (LenSx) andP GPS Guidance System (ORA).

Femtosecond Laser (LenSx)

For decades, femtosecond laser has helped surgeons perform LASIK with unparalleled precision and accuracy. In 2010 the FDA finally approved that technology for the performance of cataract surgery. Bringing a highly customized, accurate and reproducible treatment to patients undergoing cataract surgery. We are proud to state that we were one of the first adopters of this technology in the state of Michigan and in the Midwest!

With multiple laser cataract systems available currently, we utilize Alcon’s LenSx® Femtosecond Cataract Laser unit. Technically speaking there are many reasons why LenSx is right for you. You should know that LenSx has been used in more cataract surgeries worldwide than any other femtosecond laser. Used by 3,500 surgeons in 67 countries.

Benefits of Femtosecond Laser Cataract Surgery

  • Bladeless – Customizable laser incisions
  • Accuracy – Perfect cataract capsule openings to access the cataract
  • Astigmatism Reduction – Reshapes the surface of the eye
  • Predictable – Consistent, outstanding results
  • Safe – Enhanced safety profile especially for advanced and complex cataracts

Personalized Cataract Surgery

High Definition imaging for precise incisions

Less distortion, enhanced automation

GPS Guidance System (ORA)

Optiwave Refractive Analysis (ORA) is a real-time guidance system that helps our doctors navigate your unique eye during cataract surgery. Much like a GPS system it tracks your eye data after your cataract has been removed allowing our surgeons to in real-time adjust your pre-planned lens implant and astigmatism correction. Based on our studies, nearly a third of all pre-planned treatment for patients is modified or changed due to ORA’s adjustment.

It is important to note that in many practices simply consider Laser Cataract Surgery does not imply you are getting both LenSx and ORA. At Fraser Eye Care Center, we believe both are integral and necessary technologies to providing you with the best possible outcomes and results.
