Comprehensive Eye Care

At Fraser Eye Care, we are dedicated to helping residents of Detroit and all of Michigan maintain healthy eyes and clear vision. In addition to a full spectrum of specialized services, we also offer routine eye care and comprehensive eye exams.

Why Are Annual Eye Exams Important?

Some serious but treatable eye conditions require early detection for successful treatment. One example is glaucoma, a disease which has no initial symptoms but can cause irreversible vision loss. Fortunately, early signs of glaucoma are easily detected during a comprehensive eye exam and your eye doctor can create a treatment plan to prevent vision loss. Other conditions that may be detected by a comprehensive eye exam include presbyopia, diabetic retinopathy, and cancers such as choroidal melanoma. It is also important to have your vision checked yearly if you wear glasses or contact lenses to ensure your prescription is accurate.

What Happens During a Comprehensive Eye Exam?

Vision care at Fraser Eye is personalized to meet your needs, so exactly what happens at your eye exam can vary depending on your medical history, age, and current prescription. In general, you can expect your comprehensive eye exam to include the following:

  • Discussion Your eye doctor will ask you about your vision and may ask about your general health and any family history of eye conditions.
  • Visual Acuity Analysis This is usually the traditional eye chart test which will give your eye doctor a general idea of your visual ability.
  • Pupil Dilation Your eye doctor may administer eye drops that will dilate your pupils in order to fully examine your eyes. The dilating effect can last several hours, during which your eyes will be sensitive to light. Please bring sunglasses with you to protect your eyes on your way home from your exam. Your eye doctor will not dilate your pupils without your permission, but regular dilated eye exams are necessary to detect diseases that may damage the optic nerve or affect the retina.
  • Vision and Eye Health Tests There is a range of tests that may be performed at your eye exam, all of which are typically painless and quick. Some common tests include Glaucoma testing, Retinoscopy, and Refraction to help determine your prescription, Stereopsis to measure depth perception, and Keratometry, which is a test to measure the curvature of your cornea that will likely be performed if you wear contact lenses or are interested in laser vision correction.
