Cataract Surgery in Royal Oak

The experienced cataract surgeons at Fraser Eye Care’s center in Royal Oak are united by a single mission: to provide top-quality, safe, and effective eye care to each of our patients. Cataracts are the progressive clouding of the natural lens of the eye. At first, patients with cataracts may be able to improve their vision enough with glasses or contacts. Eventually, however, cataract surgery is required. For residents of Royal Oak, Southfield, Troy, Madison Heights, and surrounding communities, our surgeons rely on the latest cataract surgery technology to restore crisp, clear vision.

Basic Cataract Surgery

During cataract surgery, the cloudy lens of the eye is removed and replaced with a clear intraocular lens (IOL). In traditional cataract surgery, a standard, monofocal IOL is used. This lens helps to correct distance vision, which means that patients with refractive errors that impact near vision (like farsightedness or astigmatism) may still require corrective lenses to achieve optimal vision after cataract surgery.

Customized Cataract Surgery

Laser Cataract Surgery

At Fraser Eye Care in Royal Oak, we are proud to employ the latest technology for laser cataract surgery. Rather than making incisions with a blade, as in traditional cataract surgery, our surgeons create very precise incisions with the LenSxⓇ Femtosecond Cataract Laser.

During customized cataract surgery, we also use the ORA (Optiwave Refractive Analysis) guidance system. This allows for incredibly precise placement of IOLs and optimized vision results by providing our surgeons with real-time measurements of the patient’s eye.

Advanced Intraocular Lens Implants (IOLs)

While a standard IOL used during traditional cataract surgery is often covered by insurance, many of our patients prefer to invest in advanced IOLs. These premium intraocular lenses correct refractive errors in addition to eliminating the vision-blurring effects of cataracts. Using advanced IOLs, our surgeons can customize the results of cataract surgery to the extent that many patients no longer require glasses or contacts to see clearly.1

Cataract Surgery: What to Expect

Preparing for Cataract Surgery

The first step in getting ready for cataract surgery is to have your eyes examined by an experienced ophthalmologist. During this examination, the doctor will digitally measure and analyze the internal structures of your eyes. Next, you will have visual acuity and refractive testing so that your doctor can properly diagnose any visual impairment you may have. Finally, a slit-lamp examination of the internal structures of your eyes and a dilated retinal examination will be performed.2

After receiving a diagnosis with cataracts, there is little you need to do to prepare for cataract surgery. Your doctor may ask you to use special eye drops before your surgery, and you should arrive at our offices in Royal Oak without any makeup, lotions, or creams on your face. Additionally, you won’t be able to drive yourself home after the procedure so you’ll need to arrange for transportation.

The Cataract Surgery Procedure

Cataract surgery is a painless procedure that takes less than 30 minutes. Before the procedure begins, your doctor will numb your eyes with anesthetic drops. You may also be given an oral sedative to help you stay relaxed.

To begin cataract surgery, the surgeon will remove the natural lens of your eye from between your iris and pupil. This lens will be then replaced with a clear, artificial intraocular lens.

Your eye will naturally heal without sutures after cataract surgery. After you recover briefly in our offices, you will be released to be driven home by a family member or friend.

Recovery After Cataract Surgery

It is normal to experience mild discomfort in the first few days after cataract surgery, and this can be eased with over-the-counter pain medications. Most of our patients feel comfortable returning to work within a week after cataract surgery.

At the Fraser Eye Center in Royal Oak, we perform dropless cataract surgery on most of our patients. This means that anti-inflammatory and antibiotic medications are deposited into the eye during surgery, so patients don’t need to apply medicated drops while they recover at home.
